Wednesday's Homework:

Code the following passage ON YOUR BLOG. You must include an identification of at least 5 different techniques and code at least 15 examples (not of each technique but distributed between the 5 you choose). Remember to consider: figurative language, repetition, sentence structure, structure of the passage, point of view, punctuation, dialogue, characterization, etc. YOU MUST CREATE A KEY TO RECEIVE CREDIT.

Note: This means you'll have to copy and paste the passage on your blog and then color code the different techniques you find. You can also make things bold, underlined, highlighted, whatever. BUT DO NOT FORGET A KEY.

Passage:
Jarvis sat, deeply moved. Whether because this was his son, whether because this was almost the last act of his son, he could not say. Whether because there was some quality in the words, that too he could not say, for he had given little time in his life to the savouring and judging of words. Whether because there was some quality in the ideas, that too he could not say, for he had given little time to study of these particular matters. He rose and went up the stairs to his room, and was glad to find his wife not there, for here was a sequence not to be interrupted. He picked up the Abraham Lincoln and went down to the study again, and there opened the book at the Second Inaugural Address of the great president. He read it through, and felt with a sudden lifting of the spirit that here was a secret unfolding, a track picked up again. There was increasing knowledge of a stranger. He began to understand why the picture of this man was in the house of his son, and the multitude of books.

Extra Credit Opportunity.

If you'd like extra credit, make a blog post addressing the following prompt.

How does Paton characterize the gender's differently in this novel? What is the effect of this difference? Do you think it is fair?

To receive extra credit you must include:
1. At least 11 sentences, including a topic sentence.
2. Two correctly introduce and cited quotations from the text.
3. A semicolon.
4. A clear explanation of the effect.
